Get to know more about Australia!

Get to know more about Australia    2020.01.09

I am so lucky to be here with two international volunteers. One is from Malaysia and the other is from Australia. They shared their country's culture in student assembly twice a week. Today Jack shared Australia's weather, environment, and bushfire. Cindy sat with me. Australia's government has pledged at least $34m (50 million Australian dollars) to help native plants and animals recover from the country’s devastating bushfires. Some ecologists estimate that one billion animals have died and much of the damage caused by the fires may be irreparable.

Jack will go back to Australia next Friday. All of us will miss him. We wrote a big card for him. I hope he could come back someday.

A trip to Kaohsiung

                                       A trip to Kaohsiung    2020.01.05

Erica and I went to Kaohsiung, a beautiful city in southern Taiwan. Kaohsiung is home to several popular visitor sites, including the Love River, Shoushan (Mt. Shou), Xiziwan Bay, Lotus Pond, Qijin, and the Old City of Zuoying. It also is an ethnic melting pot, joining Hokkien and Hakka communities, the Pingpu, Tsou, Rukai, Bunun, and Paiwan indigenous tribes, and military community culture. Kaohsiung also offers scenic mountains, ocean views, and rivers, as well as a port, cultural, and historic attractions. Visitors to the city can experience the beauty of nature and savor fine cuisine, or head to the nearby Hakka village of Meinong to experience traditional oil paper umbrella art. The Neimen Songjiang Battle Array and the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist monastery in Dashu further add to the ethnic richness of Kaohsiung. Taiwan's biggest mall and well-known night markets complete the scene for a thoroughly satisfying trip.

In the beginning, we took the train to Kaohsiung and then we transfer MRT to our destination. Erica's mother attended a yogurt class in Kaohsiung. After taking the yogurt class, we ate a lot of vegetarian barbecue. We took a lot of pictures there. It was so fun.

A mini-concert in Wunsian

                                 A mini-concert in Wunsian     2020.01.17

Today I was so excited to join a Chinese music mini-concert at school. We have been practiced differently Chinese instruments in this semester. We can choose to participate in the Erhu club, bamboo flute club, or moon guitar club. Some of the kids can play well after the four months curriculum. Ruby told me about the story of the moon guitar. It sounded more gentle than the guitar. They played Christmas carol with it. It was very cute. Then Tina said more about the erhu instrument. It's a two-stringed bowed musical instrument, sometimes it was known as a Chinese violin. They played some Taiwan folk songs. It was so cool to hear local music. Lastly, all of them have an ensemble. Mat and Ting were with me to listen to the beautiful melody in the end.

Christmas in Taiwan

 Christmas in Taiwan    2019.12.25

It's a special sunny Christmas. Today we joined a fun activity in Wunsian primary school. We learn more about flag stories and the distance of the other countries. I felt excited to meet others around the world. We also received holiday cards from our lovely friends in different countries.  I felt so grateful to know each other !!  What a moment !!

A tour to Taiwan's temple and church

A tour to Taiwan's temple and church      2019.12.07

I got up at 4 A.M. in the early morning. Nick and his family brought me to a traditional temple in the north of Tainan city. They also sent me a red amulet to wear on my tail. People here believe it would protect kids against evil, disease or unhappiness. I felt so blessed! Besides, we went to a well-know glasses high heel church in Budai harbor in Chaiyi city. It is a giant shoe church for the wedding. We took so many photos there. And I had my first taste of yummy oyster noodles. What a wonderful weekend.

More information about the blue glasses church please check the website of CNN:http://edition.cnn.com/style/article/taiwan-shoe-church/index.html

A visit to Chi Mei Museum

                            A visit to Chi-Mei Museum      2020.01.01

I went to the Chi Mei museum again on the first day of 2020!  This time I had a great picnic with Iris's family. We chattered and played games. I was enjoyed to stay in the little woods. I even played traditional music for others. Everyone was surprised and loved the melody. We also found out a big music event poster -CATS. Looking forward to being in the music event someday! Then Iris showed me the sushi store in Taiwan. Sushi will be brought out to you on a conveyor belt. People grab the sushi they like. It 's yummy and fun to have sushi here.

We are little farmers.

 We are little farmers      2019.10.02~12.23

We planted corn seeds on the farm at our school. Everyone was so excited to put the tiny corn seeds into the dust.  We planted our corn without any chemical pesticides. Therefore we need to water it and mow grasses on our own in the three months. We had fun to water and mow grasses on our tiny farm. We were so happy to have the corn harvest !! Of course, they tasted so yummy !!

A fun Science Experiment

A  fun Science Experiment in Class 2019. 01.10

After the final examination, we did a very fun science experiment concerning the ‘dissolving of substances.' In the beginning, we put potassium alum into hot water and then stirred for a while. We saw some precipitant in the bottom of the cup. Secondly, we folded the wool stick into different shapes that we loved. Then, put the wool stick into hot water. We will have to wait a long time to see what is going on. I hope our experiment will be successful!

Being an assistant with Malaysia International Volunteer

Being an assistant with Malaysia International Volunteer   2019.12.26

In each semester, Wunsian Elementary school invites at least two international volunteers to school for sharing culture and to improve students' listening and speaking skills. I am really lucky to be here in December because there are two international volunteers who came from Malaysia and Australia. Today I joined teacher May's class. She is from Malaysia but she has studied in Singapore. She taught us how to use paper to make a Christmas tree. I found it difficult for me to do this hands-on activity. In the end, I realized I made a wrong cut, causing the Christmas tree to be split into two parts.

Final Examination

                                          Final  Examination      2020.01.08

Today is our school final examination. In Taiwan, for primary school, we have two examinations each semester. We have tests on Chinese, English, math, science and social studies. School held mid-term and final examinations over two continuous days. The principal hopes I can take the exam along with all the other students in Wunsian elementary school. It’s a very special experience for me. Today, we had tests on three subjects, math, social studies, and English. I hope I can get good grades. After the examination, I can play outside with other classmates.

My Christmas Celebration

My Christmas Celebration  2019.12.25

Tim and I joined in the school’s Christmas activities on Christmas day. My favorite activity was using an iPad to measure the distance to the other countries who we did the PBL projects with. It’s a very special learning experience for me because this is my first time to use the iPad to measure the distance and calculate the proportional scale. This stage took a lot of concentration!

After this stage, Cindy and I went to the other stage called “animals and their mums’. We had to play the matching game to match the baby animals with their mums. I felt that this stage was not too difficult for me since we have already been taught the answers in class.  Then, Handson and I went to the stage called ‘animal sounds’.We had to determine which sound matches the animal. For example, we have to determine which sound belongs to the horse, sea turtle, and dolphin. This stage is really special, the gatekeeper is from Tanzania. He also brought traditional clothes to school. We got to wear clothes and then take pictures. It’s very interesting.

In the final stage, Iris and I went to teacher Joyce’s stage. We had to match the flag and their country's names. This stage was also easy for me because we learned the answers through the school’s international education courses. We finished this stage very quickly!
