A trip to Baoan Train Staion and Ten Drum Cultural Village
When we talk about the most historic landmarks in Tainan, there is no denying that Baoan train station is the one of the most historic landmark of Rende area, and it is near our school. This small station just to the south of Tainan doesn’t draw a lot of tourists nowadays, but it does get a name for itself due to its Japanese influenced design. Taiwan’s railway line had started before the Japanese occupation in 1895, but most of the early construction was completed by the Japanese during that time. There still are few historic stations around Taiwan that remain from the Japanese-era, but many are disappearing or being taken out of service. Some old stations like Tainan’s Railway Station were very modern and western when they were rebuilt. Baoan Station, however, is a wooden structure that has retained its original features when it was built. It is one of only a handful of old wooden stations left on the island.
Many people visit the station, not to view
its history or take in its romance, but to buy a lucky ticket. If you buy a
ticket from Baoan to nearby Yongkang (or vice-versa), the ticket spells out
yǒng bǎo ān kāng (永保安康), which roughly translates to “safety
and health forever.” In recent years it was very trendy for students to go to
Baoan Station just to buy this ticket as a good luck charm.

Next, we went to the Ten Drum Cultural Village.Ten Drum cultural village, located in the suburbs of Tainan, is isolated from hustle and bustle of city by a quiet forest trail. Neighboring Tainan city, it offers a new place for the public to experience culture and art. It covers an area of 5 hectares with 16 old-fashioned warehouses built in Japan-ruled period. In 2005, Ten Drum Art Percussion Group took over and redesigned it. In the concept of capitalizing on idle space, designed by world-famous designer Mr. Liu Guo Cang, the village has completed its second phase with limited budget. The former Rende Sugar Refinery, after it was deserted for a long time, revitalized its century-old heritage by the group, blended in Taiwan-specific drum music developed by Ten Drum and transformed it into the 1st drum-themed international art village in Asia. We had a good time there.
