Attend Traditional Dance Class in School

Attend Traditional Dance Class in School     2020.03.06

我今天和昕霖(Vincent )一起上了新的課程,一個從來沒見過的陳老師來介紹十二婆姐,那是一種傳統的表演,老師說以後還要介紹婆姐的故事,希望下個星期趕快來!我還想繼續聽故事!

Vincent and I attended a new traditional Chinese dance class today. Today is the first day of our traditional dance class. Mr. Chen, who works in an opera troupe came to our class. He introduced a special traditional Chinese dance, called "twelve pochie folk art performance." Mr. Chen talked about the origin of the traditional dance story. Let me shared it with you guys.

In the folk legend, pochie are subordinates or maids of Madam Lin Shui who is a goddess believed by people in Taiwan and southern Fujian Province, China. She takes charge of miscarriage prevention and smooth delivery, and she is considered the protector goddess of women and young children. Legend has it that Madam Lin Shui lived in Fujian Province in the Tang Dynasty and that her name was Chen Jing-Gu. She learned about magic and helped her hometown kill monsters and expel devils. Later, Fujian Province was stricken by a serious drought, and although Chen Jing-Gu was pregnant at that time, she still set up an altar to pray for rain. Finally, there was timely rainfall after a long drought. However, she died from a miscarriage at the age of 24. After Chen Jing-Gu passed away, her village people built a temple to enshrine her, and she became a goddess who protects women and children. She is called Madam Lin Shui and Goddess of Childbirth. If a pregnant woman wants to have a smooth delivery or a child cries and is frightened, people can pray to Chen Jing-Gu for protection. It is worth mentioning that in folk customs, women are forbidden to enter a temple when they are on their menstrual periods. However, as Madam Lin Shui is the protector goddess of women and children, the rules are bent here and women can still worship the goddess in her temple during their menstrual periods.

Mr. Chen told us he will continue the story in the next class. We are looking forward to listening to the story next week.

Chamber Orchestra Performance

                               Chamber Orchestra Performance    2020.01.16

Today is a special today because we had a Chamber Orchestra Performance at school. Students performed a lot of traditional Chinese instruments. Chris told me there are Erhu, medium Ruan, and Chinese Bamboo Flute. Chris introduced medium Ruan to me. Medium Ruan is a traditional Chinese plucked string instrument. It is a lute with a fretted neck, a circular body, and four strings. Its four strings were formerly made of silk but since the 20th century, they have been made of steel (flat wound for the lower strings). It's difficult for me to play these instruments. Chris told me they have practiced for a long time. They played a lot of beautiful songs that I had never heard of. I have had a lot of different experiences in Wunsian Elementary School. I will share these beautiful experiences to my classmates when I go back to Dubai.

Fun indoor playground

                                              Fun indoor playground     2020.01.21

Today is the first day of winter vacation. Jerry and I went to an indoor playground. We had a lot of good time playing in the ball bit, frame climbing and jumping on the Trampoline. My favorited place is 'ball pit'.  When we went down the slide, we got stuck in the ball pit. It was really fun for us to try our best to climb out of the ball pit. We had tried several times but it was hard for us to climb out of the ball pit. We pretended ball bit like a swimming pool. We swam in it. Although it is winter right now, I didn't feel cold because all of the facilities are indoor. It was comfortable for us to run on the carpet without wearing shoes.

Get to know more about Australia!

Get to know more about Australia    2020.01.09

I am so lucky to be here with two international volunteers. One is from Malaysia and the other is from Australia. They shared their country's culture in student assembly twice a week. Today Jack shared Australia's weather, environment, and bushfire. Cindy sat with me. Australia's government has pledged at least $34m (50 million Australian dollars) to help native plants and animals recover from the country’s devastating bushfires. Some ecologists estimate that one billion animals have died and much of the damage caused by the fires may be irreparable.

Jack will go back to Australia next Friday. All of us will miss him. We wrote a big card for him. I hope he could come back someday.

A trip to Kaohsiung

                                       A trip to Kaohsiung    2020.01.05

這個周末,我跟諭慈(Erica)一起去高雄玩,我們搭火車和捷運,陪著媽媽去做瑜珈,最後我們還吃了素食的燒烤,謝謝諭慈媽媽帶我們出門還幫我們拍照。

Erica and I went to Kaohsiung, a beautiful city in southern Taiwan. Kaohsiung is home to several popular visitor sites, including the Love River, Shoushan (Mt. Shou), Xiziwan Bay, Lotus Pond, Qijin, and the Old City of Zuoying. It also is an ethnic melting pot, joining Hokkien and Hakka communities, the Pingpu, Tsou, Rukai, Bunun, and Paiwan indigenous tribes, and military community culture. Kaohsiung also offers scenic mountains, ocean views, and rivers, as well as a port, cultural, and historic attractions. Visitors to the city can experience the beauty of nature and savor fine cuisine, or head to the nearby Hakka village of Meinong to experience traditional oil paper umbrella art. The Neimen Songjiang Battle Array and the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist monastery in Dashu further add to the ethnic richness of Kaohsiung. Taiwan's biggest mall and well-known night markets complete the scene for a thoroughly satisfying trip.

In the beginning, we took the train to Kaohsiung and then we transfer MRT to our destination. Erica's mother attended a yogurt class in Kaohsiung. After taking the yogurt class, we ate a lot of vegetarian barbecue. We took a lot of pictures there. It was so fun.

A mini-concert in Wunsian

                                 A mini-concert in Wunsian     2020.01.17

Today I was so excited to join a Chinese music mini-concert at school. We have been practiced differently Chinese instruments in this semester. We can choose to participate in the Erhu club, bamboo flute club, or moon guitar club. Some of the kids can play well after the four months curriculum. Ruby told me about the story of the moon guitar. It sounded more gentle than the guitar. They played Christmas carol with it. It was very cute. Then Tina said more about the erhu instrument. It's a two-stringed bowed musical instrument, sometimes it was known as a Chinese violin. They played some Taiwan folk songs. It was so cool to hear local music. Lastly, all of them have an ensemble. Mat and Ting were with me to listen to the beautiful melody in the end.

Christmas in Taiwan

 Christmas in Taiwan    2019.12.25

It's a special sunny Christmas. Today we joined a fun activity in Wunsian primary school. We learn more about flag stories and the distance of the other countries. I felt excited to meet others around the world. We also received holiday cards from our lovely friends in different countries.  I felt so grateful to know each other !!  What a moment !!
